Film – Educational instrument in schools to promote innovative learning

Eighteen high school teachers from high schools across Kosovo participated in the two following workshops focused on the use of documentary film and its integration into the pre-university education curriculum in Kosovo.

Our program is licensed by the State Council for Licensing of Teachers as a continuation of the Memorandum of Cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation, for the use of the ‘’Teacher’s Digital Library’’ platform.

Under the guidance of Malbora Krajku from DokuFest and with the support of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Arlinda Bekas from the Faculty of Education at the University of Prishtina, together, both ladies shared the purpose of the workshop and presented the DokuLab education program to the teachers.

Drawing from their experience, our two collaborators, also alumni of the same workshop, demonstrated how documentary films can be used in teaching. Feride Thaqi, a psychology teacher from ‘’Ulpiana’’ Gymnasium in Lipjan, and Jeta Rexha, a psychology teacher at ‘’Hajdar Dushi’’ Gymnasium in Gjakova, shared their experiences regarding the use of film in the classroom, the advantages, and the benefits of using audio-visual tools in general.

During the first part of the day, participants had the opportunity to watch the documentary titled ‘Tash për çdo orë’’, created by Albulena Caka, a student from the film school ‘’Future is Here’’.

Mrs. Thaqi and Mrs. Rexha provided an authentic experience demonstrating how the above mentioned film could be effectively used for educational purposes. Mrs. Thaqi presented a stimulation of the classroom work environment, explaining the steps of the use of film for educational purposes based on the worksheet she had prepared, while Mrs. Rexha led a practical workshop for creating a worksheet, focusing on explaining the advantages and the value of integrating film into the learning process.

Immediately after, representatives of DokuFest, Malbora Krajku, and Dren Shporta, presented the ‘’Teacher’s Digital Library,’’ offering a detailed explanation of its functioning and providing information about the wide range of films and alternative tools offered on this platform.

In the second part of the day, we showed the documentary film: ‘’Ar-rythmic’’ by Jona Pireva and Albina Konjuhi, both students of the ‘’Future id Here’’ film school. After the screening of the film, all teachers engaged in a practical task. Each one was given the task of creating a worksheet for their subject unit, based on the themes and messages they received from the films they had watched.

In the end, all teachers successfully created the worksheets, which will later be distributed in the Teacher’s Digital Library to be available to all teachers interested in integrating film into their classrooms.

The cycle of organizing these trainings will continue until June, with further sessions planned to meet the needs of the teachers.

The next training sessions will be held on April 20 and 21, 2024, in the city of Prizren.
