MEDIA LITERACY FOR TEACHERS WORKSHOP

It’s been an eventful weekend for Dokufest in light of the teacher’s workshop on Media Literacy, held 6th through 8th of May, in association with OSCE. We returned to Kosovo’s teachers of Languages and Communication, Arts, Society and the Environment, and Civic Education courses, levels 5 and 6 (grades X-XII),  for a second time with our Media Literacy Workshop.

The Workshop was specifically on the usage of Media Tools and Media and Information Education during the Learning Process, entailing training on how to integrate documentary films as well as other means of media education and information as part of their teaching curriculum. The workshop heavily focused on developing healthy practices in the way they engage with media, ways to assess information reliability, critical thinking, analytical thinking, e-learning, and the ability to use new digital technologies.

We did so through the help of some of Kosovo’s stellar media professionals: DokuFest’s very own Malborë Krajku and Eroll Bilibani, who talked about DokuLab Program Methodology: Film in Education, and Forms of communication through Film, respectively; Muhamet Jahiri, Professor at University of Prishtina who talked about Media Education: Skills in the Digital Age; Alban Zeneli, also Professor at University of Prishtina, talked about Information Disorder and Misinformation;
Kosovo 2.0’s Besa Luci who lectured on Critical Thinking and Media Education; and last but not least, Shqipe Gjocaj an independent Gender Specialist who talked about Media education with a gender perspective.

The talks were structured in a way to stimulate discussion among the teachers as we wanted them to reflect upon their own personal experiences.

Through the DokuLab education department, DokuFest is accredited by MEST in building the capacity of teachers to use audiovisual tools in the teaching process. DokuLab also offers a significant number of documentaries and didactic materials through the Digital Teacher Library. All educational materials are related to the Curriculum Framework for Pre-University Education and are offered to teachers as an open source platform specially designed for this purpose.
