Telling stories, shaping change: ‘’Stories We Tell’’ fourth camp

The Stories We Tell project concluded with its fourth and final camp, held this February in Prizren.

Over six days, 14 participants from different communities across Kosovo immersed themselves in sessions covering everything from filmmaking discussions to filming and editing techniques. Beyond the technical aspects, they explored art and storytelling, bringing to life stories that helped them reflect on the social differences they face. With DokuFest’s support, they used filmmaking as a tool to shed light on these issues.

To deepen their understanding of storytelling, filmmaking, and cultural influences, participants visited the Autostrada Biennale and Lumbardhi Cinema. There, discussions on art and social dialogue strengthened their awareness of social change and the role of creative expression in fostering reflection, awareness, and meaningful impact.

Throughout the week, participants practiced outdoor filming techniques and engaged in hands-on fieldwork at local filming locations, followed by mentorship and feedback sessions. This practical approach not only refined technical skills but also encouraged creativity and new ideas.

By the end of the camp, participants had developed their own two-minute visual narratives, using only visuals to express how they saw each other and what they had learned—both from one another and from the camp. These short films captured perspectives that might otherwise remain untold.

On the final night, participants took part in a podcast-style setup created by the DokuFest team for the closing interview. In randomly paired groups of two, they discussed topics they had explored throughout the camp. They chose discussion topics based on their experiences and assignments, posing questions to one another on subjects they found most meaningful. The recorded interviews will be featured in the final Stories We Tell exhibition, scheduled for April.

''Stories We Tell'' throughout all four camps encouraged critical thinking, creative learning, and meaningful connections, equipping these young individuals with the skills and confidence to continue sharing powerful stories.

"The documentary film school has taught me how to channel my thoughts and how to dream. I've learned to see the world through different eyes and to find inspiration to tell a story in every corner of my life. Since then, I've never stopped making films because the inspiration, will, and knowledge I've gained accompany me every day in my life."
